Ontario Sets A Duty, Not A Warehouse Line Painting Standard
It is worth being accurate here, because much of what is written about warehouse line painting in Canada is quietly American in origin.
Ontario's Industrial Establishments Regulation contains no general requirement to mark aisles and no minimum aisle width for an ordinary warehouse. The provisions that do specify widths sit in the foundry and molten metal sections and do not apply to a distribution building. The requirement to mark permanent aisles belongs to the American federal standard, which has no force here.
What Ontario does set out is a duty. Barriers, warning signs or other safeguards must be used where vehicle or pedestrian traffic may endanger a worker. Floor marking is a recognized way of meeting that duty, and it is the one most plants choose because it works.
Design Warehouse Line Painting Around Your Own Equipment
Because the province sets a duty rather than a dimension, the warehouse line painting layout is yours to get right, and that is an advantage worth using.
Measure the widest load that actually runs the aisle and add clearance to it. A line marked narrower than the equipment needs gets crossed constantly and turns into decoration. The colour conventions everybody uses come from industry standards and long practice rather than Ontario statute, which makes them consistent from plant to plant and worth following for that alone.

The Material Decides How Long Warehouse Line Painting Survives
Traffic paint is the cheapest warehouse line painting material and lasts six to twelve months under real forklift traffic. It is the right answer whenever a layout is about to change.
Epoxy and polyaspartic warehouse line painting costs more per linear foot and lasts years rather than months, which makes it cheaper over the life of a settled layout. Where a line has to cross an aisle taking hard wheeled traffic all day, the extra build pays for itself. Standard line width is four inches, with wider warehouse line painting used on main walkways and vehicle routes.
Warehouse line painting always goes down after any coating work, once the floor has cured enough to hold it.
